As you can see, our Senior Dermal Therapist Lowri John at All Saints Skin Clinic Double Bay is well in her third trimester and final stage of pregnancy. After extensive research, and with her vast knowledge of skincare products and skin treatments, she has kindly offered to share with us what products are safe for her to be using both during pregnancy and while breast feeding.

Here is how I have been keeping my skin healthy, hydrated and protected throughout the day.

1. RATIONALE Immunologist Serum

Phenomenal daytime product. The Immunologist Serum features a large dosage of Vitamin B3/Niacinamide, which is a great pigment suppressor. It also works to effectively knock out inflammation and redness out of the skin with its hit of hydration.

2. RATIONALE Antioxidant Lipid Concentrate

Since being pregnant my skin has been very dry. Following the RATIONALE Immunologist Serum, I place about four drops of my oil soluble form of Vitamin C from RATIONALE Antioxidant Lipid Concentrate onto my hand, and then pat it gently into my skin to give it that moisturising element and ‘dewiness’/movement factor (don’t love the word ‘dewiness’, but it is very descriptive).

3. RATIONALE PhotoDynamic Day Cream SPF15

Zinc Oxide-based moisturiser for calming and hydrating the skin.  It is great for locking in my serums and giving me that light physical sun protection factor.  It has some light reflecting properties to it so makes your skin look iridescent, and gives you that lovely base before applying makeup.

4. RATIONALE Beautiful Skin Superfluid SPF50

I LOVE this product because it gives my skin the protection it needs, while successfully balancing out my entire face’s skin tone. I flick between C1 and C2 depending on the colour of my skin. I tend to go up to C2 during summertime. This SPF50 product is super light, and doesn’t feel heavy or sticky on the skin.

5. Oxygenetix Oxygenating Foundation

I have been using this product for years! The specific Oxygenetix foundation that I use contains an aloe vera base and a hyaluronic acid. I choose between the colours almond and beige, again depending on the colour of my skin and the time of year.

At times I mix RATIONALE Beautiful Skin Superfluid SPF50 with Oxygenetix Oxygenating Foundation so I have the sun protection applied with my makeup.

6. Colorescience Sunforgettable Total Protection Brush-On Shield SPF50

I always keep the Colorescience Sunforgettable Total Protection Brush in my purse EVERYWHERE I go. I absolutely LOVE this product.

It contains SPF50+ and titanium dioxide which is a great physical factor that bounces off any harmful UVA and UVB rays. Because it is in a brush formula, it is super-easy to reapply when i go out for a coffee or a lunch date. I also take it to the beach during summer to get rid of that midday shine. I even apply it to my hands when I am in the car for a long period of time.

Now I would like to share with you my evening routine.

1. Cosmedix Benefit Clean Gentle Cleanser

I only cleanse in the evening and use Cosmedix Benefit Clean Gentle Cleanser. It works perfectly, taking all my makeup and mascara off with ease. It is super gentle on my skin, which has been irritated and sensitive during my pregnancy, thanks to its native Australian sandalwood formula.

2. RATIONALE Catalyst Milk Concentrate

The RATIONALE Catalyst Milk Concentrate is made of pure peptides, and there are no AHAs or BHAs in it (which tend to dry my skin out). Salicylic acid is not a great friend of mine with my ‘reactive’ pregnant skin, and the peptides in this are great because they add hydration and help my skin find that right balance between oil and water.

3. RATIONALE DNA Night Cream

This is my vitamin A (which is a definite buzzword in and around pregnancy). None of the RATIONALE products contain tretinoin which is the raw prescription form of Retin-A.  My skin still gets the cell regulation and turnover it needs through the night to stay strong and plump.

Lower dose of retinol than DNA Night Cream.  I can only use this 3 nights a week as my eyes have been a little reactive since becoming pregnant but I find this really helps with dark circles so I do like to keep it up.

All skin products I have mentioned are available at All Saints Skin Clinic. RATIONALE are proud to admit that after extensive research into all of their active skincare products, they are totally safe to use through pregnancy and while breastfeeding. The products that I use outside of RATIONALE are also pregnancy-safe.
